ISB’s soccer season is in full swing with the finalized squads starting off on their path to IASAS. Some major changes have come about in the boys’ soccer team. Departed Varsity coach Justin Wah has left some big shoes to fill, a task being undertaken by last year’s JV coach, David Speirs. P.E teacher Mark Jaspers has taken the vacant JV position.

Some key players have departed since last IASAS, but in turn there are many new players hoping to fill in their shoes. One such player, senior Christopher G, says that he feels like he “can add some size to the back four this season and [is] excited to be given the opportunity to contribute to the squad.” Senior Captain Nathan Scott claims that “We’ve already shown our quality wining 7-0 against a very experienced Thai school, and we hope to improve on that.”  These factors have led the squad to feel confident ahead of this season.

The varsity girls’ team faces a different challenge heading into IASAS. According to varsity girl’s coach, Mr. Kevin Davy, the challenge for this team is “arranging games which are productive and good for [their] preparation for IASAS” (Mr. Kevin Davy). This is because most other varsity girls teams from other international schools play 7 v 7 and “they don’t want to play us because they don’t want to play 11 v 11. It’s not their natural game that they have trained and prepared for.” The lack of international school opposition threatens to leave this team underprepared for IASAS.

Despite these challenges, the varsity team still looks strong. Upon being questioned on his team’s strength compared to last year, Coach Davy said that they have “a good core of players coming back with experience” and “we are where we were last year, or maybe even a touch or two ahead.” Senior Captain Julia Tarrega adds, “this year we think will be less of a rebuilding year.” Julia and her five fellow seniors look to use their experience to lead their team to a successful season.

The collective attitude heading into the season is optimistic, with experience playing a key role in both squads. However, various challenges must be overcome before they are ready for IASAS in Manila.
