Panther Trails – Austin Kurt Gallagher
In an ongoing feature at PantherNation, we will be checking in every few weeks with ISB alumni as they offer their advice and reactions to university life.
Name: Austin Kurt Gallagher
ISB Class Of: 2016
College: University of Melbourne
Years in College: Just started at the beginning of 2017
What career path are you pursuing?
I’m currently studying International Relations and Law, so something in either field.
How would you describe the transition from ISB to your new college?
My transition was quite good, but being one of the few ISB graduates who went to school in my city, it took a little while to get fully used to a completely new environment.
Do you feel ISB prepared you well for your college experience (both academically and socially)?
Academically for sure. If you apply the skills you learn during the IB at ISB the amount of study in university is not that difficult to adjust to. Socially was slightly more difficult, going to such a large university it was hard at first to adjust and meet people, however if you join clubs and keep yourself open to new experiences it is not hard at all.
What advice would you give to this year’s Seniors as they follow in your footsteps next year?
The most important difference from ISB to university is the diversity of ideas. ISB is a great community, but the international school life in general can be quite insular. When you go to university you will meet people from all areas of life whose values can be in stark contrast with your own. Try not to assume you are correct, challenge yourself to defend your beliefs from an objective standpoint, and most importantly remember to learn from the whole experience, not just lectures.
Any other thoughts to share?
Just wanted to shout out Mr. A, Ms. Weber, and Dr. Eales; these three have major amounts of wisdom, if you can try to learn some of it.
