After Season Seven - Game of Thrones Theories

With fans left reeling after season seven of Game of Thrones, theories are making their way fast around the internet. Read the most popular here!

SPOILER ALERT!!

Theory #1: Tyrion made a deal with Cersei

As the Jon and Dany ship finally sailed, Tyrion was spotted lurking around in a semi-creepy manner. Although many passed this off to be the fact that he was in love with Dany (like everyone else) and was jealous, others think not. Tyrion and Dany’s relationship seems to be one of friendship, not love. So why the sulking?

Another theory is that Tyrion made a deal with Cersei when he went to go meet with her. He expressed extreme regret for the loss of Cersei’s children, and the small role he played in their deaths. However, before going into that meeting and before this small sentimental moment they shared, Cersei expressed no interest at all in having an alliance with her enemies, leading viewers to think that Tyrion said something to her to change her mind, possibly confiding in her that Dany is unable to have children. So (with Cersei being pregnant), what changed her mind could have to do with him talking to her about an heir to the throne. However, Dany and Jon falling in love has complicated this for Tyrion, especially as we begin to question whether or not she really cannot have children. In this case, jealousy is much too simple to assume for a character like Tyrion Lannister, who is a strategist and always thinks of the consequences of his actions before proceeding.

Theory #2: Jaime will kill Cersei

This season, viewers were happy to see that Jaime finally ended his twisted and incestuous relationship with Cersei. It was frustrating for viewers to see him stick with her after she massacred thousands of innocents and did committed countless horrifying acts. However, he finally reached his breaking point when Cersei revealed she was allowing the army of the dead to enter the realm, so long as she got to sit on the Iron Throne. When he threatened to leave her, she threatened to let the Mountain kill him, but was unable to do so. Now, Cersei sits on her throne, but at the cost of her three children, lover/brother, and father. This all ties into a much bigger picture of what will possibly happen in the future, and the biggest thing the throne will cost her: her life.

In season 5, Cersei visits a sorceress who reads her a prophecy, telling her that she would marry the king and have three beautiful children, both of which came true. She was then told she would be a queen, which also came true, but that a younger and more beautiful woman would come and cast her down, taking away everything she held dear. Cersei obviously saw this woman as Margaery Tyrell, and this is probably the reason she always hated her. Additionally, the prophecy also told her that, speaking of her children, “Gold shall be their crowns and gold their shrouds,”, meaning that they will all die. This came true as well. So far, everything in this prophecy has come true.

However, the final bit of the prophecy that has yet to come true is when the sorceress states, “And when your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands around your pale white throat and choke the life from you.” Valonqar is a Valyrian word which means “little brother”. Cersei’s little brother is foretold to murder her, and the first conclusion most people would reach is that the one to do this will be Tyrion, as he is clearly younger than her, and Cersei has despised him ever since he was born.

On the other hand, Jaime is also technically her little brother, as, even though he is her twin, he is the second born one. If Jaime were to turn on Cersei, it would have much more dramatic weight than if Tyrion were to. Also, it is made obvious to us that Tyrion doesn’t really want to kill her, even if he hates her, as there are so few Lannisters left. Jaime, on the other hand, seems much angrier, as he did not only walk away from Cersei, he walked away from their unborn child, making his decision all the more dramatic.

Theory #3: Tyrion is a Targaryen

Possibly the most popular theory, as this one is everywhere. There are lots of hidden clues hidden all over the show that prove this theory. Firstly, Tywin Lannister’s serious hate for his son. He has openly alluded to the fact that Tyrion might not be his son. His dying words were, “You are no son of mine.” This could be because Tywin hated Tyrion for making a mockery of the Lannister house and also for the fact that Tyrion’s mother Joanna, who Tywin loved, died during childbirth. However, there is a chance that the reason he hates Tyrion so much is because he is not actually his son.

There are a lot of in text hints that Joanna and Aerys Targaryen were intimate, as Tywin was Aery’s hand and married Joanna while in his service. Barristan Selmy tells Dany that Aerys was infatuated with Joanna and made jokes about Tywin and Joanna’s bedding (“the lord’s right to the first night.”) The fact that Tywin refused to name Tyrion as an heir to to Casterly Rock, despite the fact that neither of his other children were eligible, is also extreme.

Not only this, but in the TV show and the books, Tyrion has notable physical differences from his siblings, and not just in his height. The Lannisters’ key feature is their blonde hair, the gold they hold so dear. However, in the TV show, Tyrion’s hair is obviously brown. And in the books, he is described as having hair so pale it is almost white; white hair being the Targaryen’s trademark.

And, just like Dany and Jon, both of whom we know for sure are Targaryens, Tyrion has always dreamed of dragons, and when he meets Dany’s dragons Rhaegal and Viserion, who are locked in a cave, he sets them free and walks away unhurt.

Finally, Dany, Jon, and Tyrion, share very similar characteristics. They were all outcasts in their childhood homes, they are each the third child in their families, they have each suffered a tragic love story, and all of their mothers died in childbirth. This theory is definitely one to think about, as a new and secret Targaryen will turn the entire show around.

Theory #4: Bran will Warg into a Dragon

Bran disappointed most viewers in season seven, as he spent most of his time sitting in the snow and glowering, or creeping out Arya and Sansa. It is strange for the writers to make him this way, as he basically has superpowers (skinchanging, seeing everything that is and ever was), and can prove to be one of the most powerful players in this game.

There is a long running theory that Bran will eventually skin change into one of Dany’s dragons, and possibly even take revenge on everyone who has ever wronged the Stark family. We’ve seen Bran warg into Direwolves and Hodor, and the Three-Eyed Raven told him, “You will never walk again, Bran, but you will fly.” It could mean that he will be able to skin change into a simple bird, but that would be much too small. It could also be a reference to the fact that Bran is now the Three-Eyed Raven, but there are plenty who think that the line suggests Bran will fly by skinchanging into a dragon.

The House of the Undying prophecy also states “The dragon has three heads”. One is Daenerys, and Jon Snow is the second, but if there is a third head to the dragon, we aren’t completely sure who that might be (even though the Night King now has a Viserion wight, so he could definitely be the third head). This is a popular theory, probably because everyone wants it to come true, but it also has the least evidence for it. However, Bran needs to do something with his powers at some point, and this would be a great play for the writers to make.

There are many other theories we have missed, such as the theory that Euron Greyjoy could gain control of a dragon, Tyrion could betray Daenerys, Bran could be the Night King rather than a dragon, and that finally, the Prince that was Promised will finally be revealed. Game of Thrones is the most popular TV show in the world for a reason, and the reason is that the writers know how to use their words to twist the minds of viewers all over the world, leaving us reeling and wondering and wanting more. Which one of these theories is your favorite and which ones do you hope never come true? Are there any we missed? Tell us your thoughts in the comments.
