There is no bigger night on the Hollywood calendar than the Academy Awards. No award show holds such esteem in the film industry, no red carpet has such glamour and no event has a guest list so star studded. On February 28th the world saw another memorable Oscars ceremony, ranging from the protests of the Academy’s diversity problem, to Mad Max’s near sweep for all technical awards, and last but not least Leonardo Dicaprio’s long-awaited win. Here is a rundown of all the winners and recap of the 88th annual Academy Awards.
The evening began with Chris Rock as the host and his monologue was the perfect mix of humour and relevance as he commanded on this year’s incredibly white Oscars. There was no better comedian to, address the lack of diversity among the award nominees. During the ceremony Chris Rock called out to the A-list audience, to buy his daughter’s Girl Scout Cookies. This part lightened the mood of the ceremony of the Oscar’s white controversy.
Now, let’s move on to the red carpet, full of glitz and glamour. Jennifer Lawrence black Dior lace gown to Sofia Vergara’s navy blue Marchesa gown. The stars were all shining bright at Hollywood’s biggest night. Some of the best dressed stars were Olivia Wilde in her plunging white Valentino Couture gown. The most prestigious award of the night Best Picture went to Spotlight which was about the Boston Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. The film also took home Best Original Screenplay. Meanwhile, post-apocalypse film Mad Max: Fury Road took home all of the technical prizes, ending up as the biggest winner of the night with six awards. Bridge of Spies star Mark Rylance surprised everyone when he triumphed over Sylvester Stallone from Creed for best supporting actor. Elsewhere the prizes were predictable, including best supporting actress win for Alicia Vikander in The Danish Girl. Finally, Leonardo Dicaprio was awarded an Oscar and he received a standing ovation. Best Original Song went to Sam Smith Writings on the Wall, Sam Smith gave a shout out to the LGBT community, being the first openly gay man to win an Oscar. “ Sam Smith did a great job of making people aware of the LGBT community, and the song was amazing” said Ivana Kovacevic (9).
