For those who are unaware, or do not follow Kanye West on Twitter, a lot seems to be happening in his life. The rapper, fashion designer, and producer is apparently 53 million dollars in debt, and posted a long Twitter rant about his financial woes, even calling out Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg asking for money.
With his latest album, “The Life of Pablo”, Kanye made the bold and controversial move to exclusively release it on the streaming website Tidal. By doing so, it is estimated that Kanye lost 10 million dollars in pirating, an odd move for someone who is in crippling debt.
Kanye has always been known for his extreme moments of ego inflation, let us never forget him referring to himself as Shakespeare, but his actions lately seem to be amplified. The amount of seemingly random Twitter rants and wars with other celebrities has been a constant in the news.
He still has his talent, still has his musical genius, yet instead of making headlines about his music, Kanye is making headlines about his dumb tweets. It is becoming more and more embarrassing to be a self professed Kanye fan, since he is single-handedly ruining his own public image. People now associate Kanye West with “crazy” and “a joke,” which is unfortunate given his once appreciated honesty and favorable public opinion.
Of course, not everyone is opposed to Kanye’s senseless self destruction. Austin Gallagher (12), claims that, “Kanye’s social media rants have a better entertainment value than any of his music, so Kanye should just keep on being crazy. Although I wish he would stop with the insane clothing line.”
While I also wish he would give up the clothing line, I also wish he would stop tweeting. Kanye is an artist despite personal taste, he is a creator and innovator, he deserves to be respected. Watching this spectacle is seeing one who was once great fall from grace. Kanye is losing respect, losing fans, and most importantly losing the Old Kanye. As stated in his own song creatively titled: I Love Kanye, “I miss the old Kanye. I hate the new Kanye, the always rude Kanye.” We too miss the Old Kanye, and we want him back.
