The International sat down with ISB’s new High School science teacher, Mr. Thomson, to get all the inside details.
Where have you taught prior to ISB?
This list will show how old I am, but here goes. I taught for five years in Los Angeles, California; one year in Santa Barbara, California; seven years in Tukwila, Washington; three years at ISE in Chonburi, Thailand; four years at American International School of Bucharest in Romania and now back in Thailand at ISB.
What has been a highlight of your time at ISB so far?
That’s easy. Games Night! It was a great night of fun. I can’t wait until next year’s event.
Which subjects do you teach and why are you passionate about them?
I currently teach three classes of HL IB Chemistry and two sections of Chemistry I. In the spring, I’ll teach two sections of Biology II. I think my passion for these subjects comes from my curiosity about the world. I grew up a bit of a science nerd, as I’ve always enjoyed asking questions and trying to find answers. And of course the periodic table is one of the most amazing things humans have ever designed.
What interests you outside of teaching?
My list of hobbies include spending time with my family, travel, music, following the University of Washington Huskies and other sports teams, playing sports, hiking, scuba, golf and reading. I’m sure I’ve left out a few things, as I have quite a range of interests.
What is your favorite science joke?
There are too many! But one of my favorites:
Two atoms were walking down the street. One accidentally bumps into the other.
“Hey, you stole my electron!”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, I’m positive!”
