2018 Girls Swimming IASAS Recap

March 7, 2018

IASAS is now over, and the athletes have returned back to ISB. The girl’s finished in 3rd place, which was an amazing performance, especially because of their young and inexperienced roster, with only 1 senior and 4 returning IASAS swimmers.

The reason we were successful is because we all took leadership roles.

— Marcelina Lekawska (11)

The event was hard fought with the standing at SAS girls in 1st place with point total of 624, ISM girls in 2nd place with a point total of 489, and ISB in 3rd place with a point total of 387. The SAS girls were very strong this year, but with the young roster ISB had, we can expect even better results in the upcoming years.

For the girls to medal this year, not one person could have an off day. They truly needed to raise their game to the highest possible level, and they did,” Coach Day praises. Coming to school early to do morning practices is not a common thing for ISB varsity sports, yet the swim team practices every morning before school. The girls really put in all their efforts and had shown everyone what they’ve got, and the results showed really well how hard they fought and prepared to be able to get this point.

Captain Marcelina Lekawska (11) when asked with who contributed the most to the team’s result, says “it is impossible to select one individual. The reason we were successful is because we all took leadership roles.” However, she did want to give shout outs to Claire Hightower (10), Sophie Nguyen (9), Madison Mehta (10), and, Imogen Alexander (11), which this event their first IASAS, but were able to put up good results for the team.

Coach Day was ecstatic about the results, and also wanted give shout outs to both Claire and Sophie who has put up outstanding performances. Sophie as a freshman, earned 1 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze for the team. Claire earned 3 golds and 1 bronze, setting up 3 school records at her first IASAS tournament. It proves exactly what Coach Day said,  “good things just kept happening.”

The girls did amazingly well for their young roster, and have all gained valuable experiences during their trip. With a good finish and returning home with a medal, the girls all had wide smiles on their faces. In the upcoming years we can expect better results and maybe even a gold medal from them. How do you think our girls did this year? Feel free to leave your answers below in the comments section.
