Virtual Reality in the Library

The library has recently installed brand new technology for people to play with – Virtual Reality (VR). VR has always been out of reach for many people, due to the powerful computers needed to run the program as well as the hefty price tag it carries. The tech council says it has many educational programs which will enhance learning. The leadership of the tech council shared some thoughts on the addition of the VR.

They explained that the VR is part of an ongoing effort between HS Tech, Edtech, and the PTA. With the VR, they want to put “cutting-edge technology into the classroom learning experience” by using it to try and convey difficult ideas. Right now they are still testing its feasibility, including “systems management, software benchmarking and hardware construction” as part of the first phase of the programme. They say many teachers have participated in the trial and found the Virtual Reality to be an “excellent” tool for learning.

They have wanted the VR at ISB since the beginning of the school year, and have worked with the PTA to “make it a reality.” They have a few games which they can use to test the VR device- including Portal, Mirror’s Edge, and Minecraft- however, there is a lack of VR games at this time. The VR was funded by the PTA, and they had enough to get a HTC Vive as well an anOculus rift, two different virtual reality systems.

The VR will overall be a good addition to the library and a valuable learning resource. However, because a single Oculus Rift is $399(13,028 baht) and a HTC vive $599(19542 baht), the price is too high to affordably fit them into all classrooms.
