Earlier this year under what some would call suspicious circumstances President Donald Trump fired FBI director James Comey. This comes after months of WikiLeaks suggesting Trumps campaign had contact with the Russian Government. Comey who was heading an investigation into the Trump-Russian connection was according to the White House fired because of his miss handling of the Clinton emails. Not only is it suspicious that this was one of multiple justifications given by the White House, but it is also odd that at the time Trump praise Comey for sending the cautionary letter to the Senate, which may well have resulted in the Trump presidency. Despite the unusual circumstances the White House claims no wrongdoing, meanwhile Andrew G. McCabe is currently acting director of the FBI.
The US department of homeland security (DHS) has banned laptops and tablets entering the United States as carry-on baggage from multiple middle Eastern countries and is now considering expanding that ban to Europe. This would come at a major in convenience to travelers who often rely on devices for entertainment during flights that often last as much as 13 hours. It also asks passengers to check electronics a prospect which could result in more frequent theft of checked baggage. The agency says of terrorists “Today, the intelligence suggests they’re trying to hide explosives in electronic devices,” all though this may be true this could result in a loss of potentially millions of dollars for the airline industry.
A grassroots organization known as the Ancient Forest Alliance has recently found a stand of old growth forest on Vancouver Island, Canada. The Grove was found by cofounder TJ Watt when bushwhacking through publicly owned timberlands. The Grove found now name Jurassic Grove is ancient with trees upwards of 1000 years old and trunks more than 3 m in diameter. Unfortunately the province of British Columbia still allows for the large-scale logging of the last 10% of old growth forest on Vancouver Island. The Jurassic Grove itself is approximately 130 ha in size with the most impressive region of 40 hectors still open to logging. The old growth forests on British Columbia’s coast are vital for supporting endangered species such as the spotted owl and Marbled murrelet. They are also beneficial to local economies for ecotourism, Salmon and clean water. To support the protection of this endangered ecosystem you can visit ancientforestalliance.org, a nonprofit committed to protecting the last of BC’s rain forest, while also ensuring sustainable second growth logging in the province.
