When Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock), an executive editor of a book publishing company finds out that she is being deported to Canada, she blackmails her assistant Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) to “marry” her. In return, she will promote him to an editor position and publish his book. They head over to immigration and meet Mr. Gilbertson (Denis O’Hare) who immediately realizes their situation and questions them.
