Sports have come a long way since the 20th century. While many could argue that it is the intensity of the game that makes the fans go crazy, it is actually the little things that we take for granted that make sports special. Here is a short list of just a few of them.
1) Instant Highlights
It would not be weird to say that Internet has changed it all for sports. Within minutes after the game, sports fans are able to watch the full highlights of the game on the Internet, without missing out a single important moment of the game. Way back then, if you missed a game, you had to wait until Sportscenter or your local newscast to relive it.
2) Advanced Statistics
We analyze and worship the game. We watch the game before the game and the game after the game. We talk about what might happen in the game. We talk about what is happening in the game and then we talk about what happened in the game. We talk about what could have and might have happened in the game but did not happen. It is all about statistics in modern day sports.
I guarantee that any fan will be able to tell you the last time an African American basketball player scored using his left hand, jumping over a mixed race half Indian, was in 1967 when the OKC Thunders beat the Chicago Bulls.
3) Teams that never win are winning
Did you know that the last time Chicago Cubs won the World Series was in 1908?
Did you know that the Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA championship this year for the 1st time in their club’s history?
Did you know that Leicester City F.C beat the odds of 5000/1 and lifted the Premiere league trophy in the 2015~16 season?
All fans are very lucky to have gotten to see the tortured franchises and cities win like they have.
4) Illegal Streaming
Reddit. Navixsport. Ustream. Youtube. You name it.
This is another reason why Internet has changed it ALL for sports. If you are in Thailand and there is a basketball game happening in the U.S, you can find it online. However, there are also so many more networks that legally live stream the games. The point is that there has never has there been so much access to live sports.
5) The existence of multiple uniforms
Back in the days, there used to be only two uniforms; home and away.
Now, there are three to four different uniforms for every professional team and there are even limited edition jerseys being sold as well. Uniforms have now become one of
the things that keep the fans eagerly waiting for the upcoming season to start. Also, wearing your team uniform is one of the easiest and definite ways to prove to the people around you that you are a diehard fan of your team.
