Going into election month, two controversies surrounding the candidates have become a topic of hot debate: a certain statement made by the presidential candidate Donald Trump and the misuse of emails by the hands of Hillary Clinton.
These controversies has certainly created an uproar of heated opinions, so we got in touch with some people in the ISB community to see what they have to say about both Donald Trump’s and Hillary Clinton’s biggest controversies.
“It is an issue that has been underplayed by most mainstream media and is more important than most people think. The fact that Hillary was was given notice that the FBI were going to be investigating her email server weeks before the investigation started gave her plenty of time to cover her tracks. This is a huge example of corruption and is a federal offense. This is not only an example of Hillary Clinton’s lack of trustworthiness and criminal conduct but also a grave matter of endangering national security. This among other things is simply unforgivable.”
– Josh Grove (10)
“I personally believe that she [should not] have deleted all the emails, and it does raise question onto what was in those secret emails. It was wrong of her, but nonetheless I think that even though she had this one scandal, she is still the better candidate. I mean, she is running against Donald Trump after all.”
– Claire Sherwood (10)
“I think it is a complete disgrace. Hillary has lied about it and mishandled it over and over again. Hillary put national security at risk by doing this and lied to the FBI and the national courts. She should be imprisoned and removed from the presidential race. What she did was illegal. No question about it. I [do not] want a president with a history of endangering the country she wants to rule.”
– Adam Scherrer (10)
“I think that this is a very scandalous subject, to be very honest, my opinions are mutual. I think that people often make mistakes and it is inevitable that someone in such a big position would make that mistake as well. Although she [should have] been more careful because she plays a big role for the nation, I do believe that mistakes can happen. However, I do agree that she should be charged in some way for deleting those emails that were caused by her own mistakes.”
– Jelena Dahl (12)
“There has been so much controversy over Hillary Clinton’s email scandal that I feel like other things about her, like her policies, are overlooked. I am not trying to justify Hillary’s scandals – Trump is what’s wrong with American culture, and Hillary is what’s wrong with American politics. Nevertheless, we should focus more on their policies and personal character and decide for ourselves who would better lead America for the next four years.”
– Pim Singhatiraj (12)
“I find it utterly disgusting the way he sexualizes women. You would think by now, in this day and age, [we would] be past this, especially coming from someone who is a candidate to run an entire country. [It is] really sad and I find it horrific.”
– Jasmine Karaul (10)
“I think Donald Trump [cannot] be taken as a serious politician. His entire campaign is based on the fact that people are afraid of what is happening in the world right now, and want a leader who is strong and promises to fix the issues that they perceive to exist, both real and fictional.”
– Gian Chansrichawala (11)
“I believe a man with no respect for women should not be in the American spotlight. It shocks me how he still chooses to make degrading comments towards women, even while running for president. Not only does Trump lack decency and respect, it seems like he lacks common sense in terms of strategy. I am disappointed in Trump and his comments, and I am also scared for the women who choose to associate themselves with Trump.”
– Pim Singhatiraj (12)
“I think my thoughts on Trump’s remarks on women are going to be quite predictable. I think [it is] disgusting, and I think [he is] disgusting. Having a man is such a position of power would intimidate any woman he harassed. A man who cannot control what he says, and cannot learn from his actions at the age of 70 is not a man fit to be president. Donald Trump’s society, the one he would instill upon the United States, would be a society of low standards, one where women and girls would not be treated with dignity and respect.”
– Helena Marlowe (12)
“Trump has never deviated from outright stereotyping, demeaning, and objectifying women. He is an imminent danger to the progress that women have made over the past several years. It disheartens me to think that there is even a remote possibility that he could be our next President.”
– Jackie Venezuela, ISB counselor.
As one can see, the political spectrum consists of a wide array of opinions and viewpoints. However, it is important to remain civil and understanding of every opinion, especially with the ongoing emergence of social media where you will expose yourself to different viewpoints that you may not necessarily agree with. A topic such as this year’s presidential election will always come with intense and devoted opinions, so it is important to remain civil and respectful of everyone’s perspectives. With that said, everyone can agree on one thing: November 9th (Thai Time) will go down on our calendars as a historical day.
