AI As Politicians
March 28, 2018
Politicians in this day and age are viewed by many people as morally bankrupt, with their own agendas and ideas, acting for themselves rather than for the country. This is not necessarily true, but claims are thrown left and right everyday about Donald Trump staying at his hotels on White House money, as well as a handful of the usual conspiracy theories. When you look at Putin, whose net worth is estimated to be as high as $200 billion, it would make him the richest man on earth, ever.
The progress made in artificial intelligence is to the dismay of Elon Musk, who says “With artificial intelligence we are summoning a demon.” There are many pros and cons to AI. A thought going around now is that if they pass the Turing test (a test for intelligence in a computer, requiring that a human being should be unable to distinguish the machine from another human being by using the replies to questions put to both), which no AI has done yet, but if it is done in the future, it opens up a world of possibilities for humanity.
One of those possibilities is that of having Artificial Intelligence as a nation leader. While it may seem like something out of a TV show when you have a robot with its finger on the infamous red button, it would arguably be better than the likes of what we have today. AI would act only with their nation’s interests at heart, would not need to sleep or take breaks, meaning it could be ready for anything at any time of day.
It is often said that we are in a world with wars of technology and information, like the Wannacry attack in which infected millions of outdated civilian and government computers. Investing in technology is incredibly important in securing a strong nation, especially in the near future.
While this seems like the far future, a distant episode of Black Mirror, the backstory to a nuclear fallout, or all of the above, it is undoubtedly a possibility as the technology progresses. No AI has passed the Turing test yet, but as bots like Tay AI are rolled out and the technology begins to get smarter, the boundary could eventually be broken. That could either usher in a golden age or an apocalypse for humanity. Or maybe it will not even be that big of a deal.
