Revving Up For Registration
In the coming weeks the ISB high school will be pondering their choice for Global Citizenship week taking place in from the 8th to 15th of February.
Of course, deciding what to do with many people’s one week off IB is not left completely up to chance, and the GCW course fair was there to inform the verdict.
The International decided to find out what people are thinking abo
ut this year of GCWs. From Freshmen who’re heading to the north of Thailand to teach kids English on the Maekong rive to Seniors, who’re pining to go to Oman, everyone is preparing for registration day.
Alexandria Heese (12) says that she “plans on going to Painters with a Conscience because most of my (her) friends are wanting a more relaxed GCW” for their senior year.
Meanwhile Josh Upadhyay (10) is looking at Borneo, since he’s “quite the active person, so all the hiking and outdoor activities are appealing” however, it seems there is a common thread as he continues by saying “most of my friends are interested as well, and I mean, GCW is awesome with friends!”
Nevertheless not all students plan on going just because their friends are. “I think this is my chance to do some meaningful community service in Thailand,” says TJ Kim (11), explaining his choice for the local Painters with a Conscience.
New student Ida Böjegren (11) is staying in Thailand for her first GCW hoping to go on the Phang Nga Bay Trip. Since Ida finds the “Thai community and lifestyle interesting,” and “going mountain biking and hiking”, this trip seems like a perfect fit.
While each grade will of course have a few new students pondering their first GCW, the entire Freshmen class will be experiencing this operation for their first time. Gabe Spira (9) for example has “been leaning towards going on the Operation Smile trip” saying that he “enjoy(s) working for kids and getting community service hours”. An additional pull factor for Gabe is that it will fill out his in Thailand requirement.
While most of last years trips will continue to be offered, a select few will get to experience this year’s new trip, Oman: Sand, Sea and Stars.
In Oman, students will be performing a huge variety of activities all across the beautiful landscape of Oman.
Those going on the trip will get to do everything from dolphin watching, snorkeling and kayaking to trekking through canyons and riding camels.
The seven-day trip led by Mr. Soule and Ms. Perkins is for students seeking physical challenges, rich cultural study and hands on learning activities such as identifying wild animals by their tracks.
The International is certain the trip will fill up quickly, and wishes luck to the twenty Seniors who will most likely fill out the GCW before the Juniors even have a chance to register.

Great Article Austin. But I think you are little off with your prediction, after senior register there are still 4 spot left for junior! 🙂
