Drew’s Last Jump

The 2017 track season is finally here with Andrew Thornton (12) making his final season debut here at ISB. Andrew, more commonly called Drew by his fellow classmates, has been on the ISB Varsity Track & Field team since he was a freshman three years ago.

Drew has become a big threat at IASAS for other teams. He is one of those players that the other teams do not like to compete against due to his superiority in high jump. While he is certainly best known for his high jump, he also competes in the triple jump and the long jump.

Nonetheless, the favored event for Drew is the high jump, the event in which he got within three centimeters of breaking the IASAS record of 195 cm at IASAS last year in Jakarta. He says, “breaking the IASAS record is certainly my goal for this season.” He added on, “one of my main role models: The Little Engine that Could, was able to achieve something thought impossible just by saying ‘I think I can, I think I can.’ I’m trying to have that same mindset about breaking the IASAS record this year.”

We asked him how he was first introduced to high jump and he responded, “I started doing High Jump in 5th grade for PE class, but never did it again until I was in 9th grade. I’ve done High Jump every year since then.”

This year is his last year in high school and also his last season of Varsity sports. Knowing this, he says that he is really putting in all the work that he can, so that he can proudly leave ISB with the IASAS record. We also asked him what kind of expectations we can have for him and his response was “that I will do my best.” He also said that “you can have the expectation that I’ll be jumping, and that I’ll be wearing a black and gold jersey with a Panther on the right side close to my heart.”

Can he do it? We’ll just have to wait until 5th of April where 2017 IASAS Track & Field is going to be held in Panthers territory. Whether or not Drew is leaving ISB with an IASAS record, one thing is for sure. He is going to be remembered as one of the best High Jumpers in IASAS history.
