Boys and Girls Tennis Prepare for IASAS

January 29, 2020

With a quick change in location due to ISKL not being able to host, the ISB girls and boys tennis teams will have to be split for their IASAS this year. With IASAS fast approaching they’re fitting in as much training as possible before having to wish each other luck, the boys sending off their girls team to Singapore, while they defend their home court.

Last year Tennis was hosted at home here at ISB, and a great turnout for the boys with 2nd place means a good outlook on hopefully medalling again.

With girls coach Femme, explaining some intense training leading up to IASAS, the tennis girls are hoping that they can bring something shiny this year.

Girls captain, Trisha Sutivong, has a few words to say about their training; “The training has been pretty intense, ranging from morning drills to practice sessions over the winter break. Since IASAS this year is at SAS (grass courts), we have also had some downtown practices to prepare for the tournament.”

Xuan Fan (12), one of the captains of the girl’s team, had a few things to say about her teammates. “I think everyone on the team plays a vital role in getting each other through tough matches and practices. Tennis is different in that it often feels like an individual sport, but our performances are heavily impacted by the support our team brings by cheering each other on. Tennis is a very mental game so it’s important for everyone on the team to have high spirits and be positive, especially when someone is having a tough match or is just having a bad day on the courts. I think our freshmen have really brought a refreshing energy to the team. They’re always willing to learn and train hard which is inspiring for the rest of us.”

Jonah Cunney (11), one of the boys’ captains, remarks on how this year’s team compares to the previous year’s teams. He says, “This year is much different than last year. We have a lot of young talent this year that we didn’t have last year and I feel like that adds lots of depth to our team. I also feel like this year we have a very good chance of winning gold so that motivates us to work as hard as we can to get to that goal. In addition, the coaches are very invested in us being the best we can be, not saying they weren’t last year but they have been great this year as well. Overall, the team is well rounded and looking strong to compete and win gold at IASAS.”

IASAS runs Thursday, Jan 30th to Saturday, Feb 1st. You can catch the games live here at ISB, or on the streaming services here: IASAS Boys Tennis (ISB)  and IASAS Girls Tennis (SAS).
