Let the Games Begin – Varsity Football Season

football        The start of a new school year also indicates the start of new football season for many of our Panthers. Last year, both the Varsity Boys and Girls only reluctantly accepted their bronze medals, as many believed that the color didn’t reflect the hard effort they had put in throughout the season. Seeking a higher finish at IASAS in Jakarta this season, both teams have been putting in a tremendous amount of effort from day one.girls

The girls went through major changes entering this season, not only by recruiting 8 new players out of a total 16, but also by welcoming their new head coach Adam Kirk. Coming from an international school in Beijing, Coach Kirk has plenty of experience in coaching Varsity football. With the 3rd week of training coming to an end, Coach Kirk said that, “coaching the squad five nights a week really allows him to build a Girls’ football program and make each girl improve individually and as a team member.”

Upon being questioned about the eight new recruitments to the team, Coach Kirk responded, “one of main focuses will be finding the best formation for the team in an 11-a-side game, as there are multiple options available.” Coach Kirk is hoping to build upon the excellence of previous coach Kevin Davy to bring the team up to another level by the time IASAS comes around.

For the boy’s side, there have only been moderate changes with six seniors departing from last year’s team. As one of the main strengths of the team this season, Coach Tahan pointed out the “10 strong juniors, including a few of them who help bring unity and organization on and off the field, as they have been on the varsity team since their freshmen year.”

Of the eight seniors in the boy’s squad, two names stand out to many of our fellow panthers: Hayuma Iwata and Ryo Matsuki. Not only are both veterans who have participated in two IASAS football tournaments, but they also share the belief that this year could be the golden season. “Because we won silver two years ago and bronze last year, it is now our faith to win gold medal in my last year,” claimed Iwata. Ryo added on with high confidence, “we have a very strong side this year with only a few leaving from last year’s team. I’m confident that we will win gold this season as long as we continue to keep in mind the phrase, ‘Work Hard..ER!’”

With both Football IASAS Exchange and ISB’s Friendship Tournament happening on home turf within the next two weeks, it will certainly be a great sample of what successes they could go on to achieve.
