Dear Freshman Hanna,

With only 40 days left until graduation, it is time to impart some wisdom that has been acquired from the last four years. Before I get into the important stuff, I want to let you know not to be embarrassed of the stuff you like. Stop telling people you hate One Direction because that is a lie, so just stop no one actually cares.

Ok, now on to the more important things.

It is ok to fail.

It is kind of cliche but it is also glaringly true. If you fail a test, it is not the end of the world. If you get a C on a project that lowers your overall grade, you can bounce back. Acknowledge your mistakes, learn from them, and work harder.

Accept change.

Things change, that is just how high school works. Your friends will change. Your opinions will change. The way you present yourself will change. The best way to have an enjoyable high school experience is to adapt to the change in your life. Embrace that things are going to be different, and understand that it is ok!

Enjoy every moment.4b

Four years seems like a long time, but those four years move so quickly. Do not spend every weekend watching Netflix in your room, you can do that whenever. Spend as much time with your friends as you can, because you may never get to do that with them again. Try new things, have fun, and do not waste your limited time.

Also just keep in mind that while high school is not as scary as people told you, Seniors are even scarier than you could have imagined.

Dear Freshman Sophie,

First of all, you should know that it does get better. Middle School sucks for everyone, and High School is not much more fun, but it is not the end of the world. It never is. I am living proof that getting a C on that one math test in sophomore year does not matter, and you really should try to go running more, but even if you don’t, it will be okay.

Change is good. You and I both know how stubborn we are, but never–and I mean never–resist change. You don’t believe in fate and you still won’t when you’re a senior, but things truly do happen for a reason. What has happened in the past cannot be changed, and what will happen in the future will happen regardless of how much you worry about it. The present is my favourite time to think about, and the sooner it becomes yours, the happier you will be.

You’re going to start getting more independence and far too much freedom, but with it comes responsibilities. Have fun and be your own person, but do not be lofty. Pragmatism prevails in, like, 99% of the situations you get into. Give or take. At the same time, don’t repress your feelings. You are entitled to being happy as much as you are to being sad. Adolescence is weird and uncomfortable, but everyone goes through it, even the “cool” kids, who, I assure you, definitely have their own problems. No one is perfect, and calling someone flawless isn’t a compliment.

Also, sidenote: popularity does not last forever. By the time you get to senior year, it isn’t even really a 4dthing. High School isn’t your introduction to reality–it’s the prologue. The day you decide that it doesn’t matter what other people think, so long as you’re happy with yourself, is one of the best days of your life. Be confident. You owe yourself as much.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, own who you are. You’ll start winging your eyeliner and you may or may not dye your hair pink, and no, mom, it is not just a phase, but–I digress. You are who you are, and there’s absolutely no one else you should or would ever want to be.
