The 2016 awards show season has officially kicked off in high gear on January 10th with the 73rd annual Golden Globes Awards. Hollywood’s finest gathered in the entertainment capital of Los Angeles, to address the start of a great season. The Golden Globes may be a more laid-back version of the Oscars, but it praises both film and television. The 2016 show was hosted by comedian Ricky Gervais, who kept us on our toes the entire show with his witty sense of humor.

Let’s not forget the red carpet; the stars were cloaked in glitz and glamour for one of Hollywood’s biggest nights. The Golden Globe’s red carpet is one of the first major fashion moments of 2016, and all the stars looked stunning. This year, winter whites, orange reds, bold metallic dominated the Golden Globes red carpet. Some of the best dressed stars were Jennifer Lawrence who shone in a bold and bright red Dior dress, Kate Winslet who glowed at the carpet in a gorgeous and striking Ralph Lauren Royal blue dress and Jennifer Lopez in a dazzling and ravishing yellow cape inspired Giambattista Valli dress. Additionally, Lady Gaga surprised us all in an elegant and classic black Atelier Versace Couture dress and lastly Zendaya, the 19 year old style icon, showed confidence and turned heads in a burgundy lace Marchesa dress.

Now to the main purpose for this night other than fashion, are the winners of the big night. Let’s begin with the films. The Revenant has triumphed at this year’s Golden Globes and took home three awards, including the night’s most coveted prize for the best dramatic film. Leading man Leonardo Dicaprio took home best actor in a drama, while Alejandro G Inarritu won for his directing. The Martian was also honored with best picture, comedy or musical film and Matt Damon earned the second best actor musical or comedy award for his role. In this movie he played an astronaut force to use science and his wits to survive after being left behind in Mars for many years. Jasmine Karaul (9) said “ [She] was very happy that The Martian won an award it was one of [her] favorite movies of 2015. [She] thought Matt Damon did a great job in the movie.”

In another category, newcomer Brie Larson beat out the likes of Cate Blanchett and earned best actress in a movie drama for her portrayal of a kidnapped and captive young mother in Room. Hollywood darling Jennifer Lawrence won best actress in a comedy film for David O. Russell’s Joy; based on a true story of a single mom who overcame poverty and a hectic family by inventing an innovative mop and selling it on Home Shopping Network. Chloe Szalai (9) said “ [She] thought that Jennifer Lawrence played a great role as a woman who is a great inspiration to be successful. [She] really enjoyed the movie” Kate Winslet picked up best support actress for her role in Steve Jobs; Winslet played Apple market executive, Joanna Hoffman. Another member of the cast from Steve Jobs, Aaron Sorkin, was awarded best screenplay. Sylvester Stallone earned a standing ovation from fellow actors when he was named best supporting actor for his comeback as Rocky Balboa in Creed. Pixar’s critical and commercial smash Inside Out won best animated movie. Finally, best original song went to Sam Smith’s Writings on the wall in Spectre.

Moving on to television awards, USA network’s exciting new hacker drama, Mr. Robot took the prize for best drama series, beating out the likes of popular series such as Empire and Game of Thrones. Christian Slater won best supporting actor in a TV series for his role as an anarchist on the show Mr. Robot. Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle, about classical musicians in New York was named best TV series comedy. Mozart’s star, Gael García Bernal was also awarded best actor in a TV comedy. In another category Empire’s Taraji P Henson won best actress in a TV drama for her role as Lyon family matriarch Cookie. She celebrated the win by handing out cookies to her fellow stars in the audience. Rachel Bloom picked up best performance by an actress in a TV series comedy for CW’s Crazy Ex- Girlfriend. Jon Hamm won best performance by an actor in a TV drama series, for his portrayal as a tormented, womanizer in AMC’s Mad Men. Oscar Isaac who costarred as a rebel fighter pilot in Star Wars: The Force Awakens accepted the award for best actor in a miniseries in HBO’s Show me a hero. Popstar Lady Gaga was overwhelmed with emotion when she won her first Golden Globe for best actress in a miniseries for her role as a Countess in FX’s American Horror Story. Best supporting actress in a TV series went to Maura Tierney for Showtime’s The Affair. Finally, Wolf Hall, a drama about political machinations during England’s Tudor dynasty won best miniseries.
