You graduated from one of the top universities in the nation. Your resume is filled and saturated with experience, ambition, and passion. Yet, you are denied a prosperous career opportunity solely because of tattoos that you are unable to cover.

Multiple professions deny employment to those whom have visible tattoos. Nurses, police officers, teachers, the hotel/resort business, and government careers are just some of the many professions that look down on ink. According to a Pew Research Poll from 2010, twenty-three percent of Americans have tattoos, and according to the Center for Professional Excellence at York College of Pennsylvania, sixty-one percent of human-resource managers said a tattoo would hurt a job applicant’s chances.

Thana Witchawut (11) stated his opinion on the topic, “depending on your career, I think tattoos can affect your chances in getting in a job of your choice”. Valentina Sarmiento (11) added, “I don’t think it should matter when it comes to most professions. If the person is qualified for the position they should be hired, no matter how they look”.

Reasons for the difficulty in being hired with tattoos are the theory that tattoos are rebellious, unprofessional, and unhealthy. Because tattoos are often affiliated with gangs, criminal activity, and against the social-norm, those with tattoos are quickly stereotyped as uneducated, and immature for “permanently scarring their body.”

However many believe that views on tattoos in the corporate world will change as those from recent generations replace older generation’s positions. The majority of our youth’s perceptions on body art are radically different from our senior’s. Tattoos are now being considered with an open-mind; beliefs of self-expression and individual, personal freedom are becoming more accepted.

As of now, many inked beauties will need to conceal their marked skin. However in a few years, that may change.
